This is something that I have been pondering over for a while now, the subject of growing up. Some things that I have observed over the last couple of months in my own life and the life of others has prompted me to ask this question.
Do people really "grow up", or do they just take themselves too seriously?
Now I know that we do mature and that is something that is definitely needed, but to what extent? There are things that we need to take more seriously such as financial matters, family, etc, but does that mean that you have to totally revamp the person that you are? Or is that just something that we think that we have to do in order to be successful in life?
Do you know any friends that you had in high school or college that are totally different now then you once knew them? I know I do and sometimes I get the feeling that they kind of look down on me a little bit because I am not as "mature" as they are now and it frustrates me.
What brings this on? Well marriage is a big one and the most common that I have seen. I know people that think they automatically grew-up because they got married. What's the deal? No more guys nights, no more dumb jokes, and the list goes on.
So I'd like to know what other people think about this cause it's something that I think is a big issue. Thanks,

oh crap, you're talking about ME, i know you are!!
it's true, i don't play as many video games and have as many guys nights as i used to...but most of that is because i A)have a wife 2)have a daughter C) have a full time job
i love video games and i love guys nights, but i simply lack the time to have them consistently. when i get the chance...then i take it! like tomorrow night for instance, i'm hitting up the alexisonfire/full blast/rise against show at UNB. and it will be dandy.
so yeah, i've grown up and have new commitments, but as far as being 'grown up'? heck no.
I think you're right Jon...I think that we do have to mature, but in matters of the heart and mind. but to be true to who you are, you need to be you, and if that is telling dumb jokes or playing video games, than be you. I think if you feel the need to cahnge that due to society or what we call "the church" than you're taking yourself to seriously and need a quick beating in XBOX.
Jesus certainly didn't say simply in passing, "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...*mumble* I came so you can have life and life to the full...*mumble*" I think "growing up" is an ill-constructed term. Scripture teaches us about growing out. Though our hearts grow fonder of God and His will on this earth, we are to express all that within the Kingdom of God. That is our purpose for getting older - expanding our view of God, growing deeper in love with Him, and showing that love to others. The world has certainly constrained many people by imposing this necessity of "growing up". Yes, we have to, at times, recognize our social setting, or audience if we're preaching a sermon. We have to become responsible for other lives, for our financial situation, etc. But there's no reason that that has to be such a stressed dichotomy. Though we may need to learn new skills or values through life-lessons, the only way we should be changed is by the power of the Holy Spirit working within us and revealing to us His path.
Dang, I had to go and get pneumatic...
Good thoughts J-Bil
